Local SEO for clinics and medical practices

Most patients choose a provider close to home, and most local searches end in the map pack or an AI answer that lists nearby practices. Local SEO decides whether your practice is in that short list.

What is local SEO for a medical practice?

Local SEO helps a practice appear when patients search for care nearby, in the Google map pack, Bing, Apple Maps and AI assistant answers. It covers a complete business profile on each platform, consistent name, address and phone data across directories, a steady flow of genuine reviews and a strong page for each location.

What does local SEO include?

  • Google Business Profile. Correct primary and secondary categories, services, attributes, hours, photos, questions and answers, and regular updates. Separate profiles for individual physicians where appropriate and allowed by Google's guidelines.
  • Bing Places and Apple Business Connect. Often unclaimed, and important: Bing data feeds Microsoft Copilot and is widely reported to feed ChatGPT search, and Apple Maps powers Siri.
  • Healthcare directories. Healthgrades, Zocdoc, Vitals, WebMD Care, specialty society directories, insurer directories and hospital affiliation pages, all aligned on the same facts.
  • Reviews. A consistent, compliant process for asking every patient for feedback, and guidance for responding without disclosing health information.
  • Location pages. One page per office with address, directions, parking, hours, physicians at that location, services offered and MedicalClinic schema.
  • Local authority. Mentions and links from local organizations, media, hospitals and community groups.

Why does local SEO matter for AI answers?

When a patient asks an assistant for a provider nearby, the assistant typically retrieves map listings, directories and review sites. The practices it names are usually the ones with complete, consistent listings and a solid review profile. Local SEO is therefore the base layer of GEO for medical practices. We explain the selection process in how AI assistants choose which doctor to recommend.

How does the work run?

PhaseWhat happens
Week 1Audit of every listing and directory profile, review profile and competitor comparison in the map pack.
Weeks 2 to 4Claim and correct listings, rebuild Google Business Profile, publish or fix location pages and schema.
Month 2 onwardReview routine, profile updates, local authority building, monthly tracking of map pack visibility, calls and direction requests.

What about reviews and compliance?

We set up review requests that go to every patient in the same way, never only to happy ones, and never with incentives. The FTC's rule on fake reviews, in force since October 2024, prohibits fake and purchased reviews. When responding to reviews, a practice should never confirm that the reviewer is a patient or mention any detail of their care. We provide response templates that respect this.

What does it cost?

Local SEO can be scoped on its own or as part of a medical SEO retainer. The main factor is the number of locations and physicians. Contact us for a quote.

Frequently asked questions

What is the map pack?

The map pack is the block of three local business listings Google shows with a map for searches with local intent, such as "pediatrician near me". It is driven mainly by relevance, distance and prominence, including reviews.

Should each physician have a Google Business Profile?

Google's guidelines allow individual practitioner profiles in some cases. Whether it helps depends on the practice structure. We assess this case by case to avoid duplicate or competing listings.

Why does Bing Places matter?

Bing data powers Microsoft Copilot and is widely reported to be one of the sources behind ChatGPT search. Many practices never claim their Bing listing, which leaves a gap in AI answers.

Can you remove negative reviews?

Only reviews that violate a platform's policies can be reported for removal. For everything else we focus on responding professionally and building a steady flow of genuine reviews.
